Car Rigging
Tips & Tricks
We employ a variety of tricks when setting up car rigs. With a multitude of hardware available half the battle is choosing softmount vs. hardmount, pre-manufactured setup vs. custom, where you need adjustability, and whether you need to provide more integration for multiple rigs. Let’s talk future-proofing your rigs with adjustability and thinking ahead for multiple camera positions.
The why behind the rig
This car rig was built for a shot through the passenger window while clipping the side mirror, emphasizing adjustability using a vertical pipe. Unlike a hood or suction rig, this build allowed easy height changes and repositioning, with thoughtful triangulation and safety considerations throughout.
Priorities Over Perfection
When building a car rig, prioritize adjustability based on the shot—horizontal, vertical, or both—while balancing rig time and efficiency. A perfectly adjustable rig is useless if it takes too long to build and costs you the shot.
Perhaps the most important part of rig building is prioritization. You can have adjustability in every direction and a support system in place for multiple rig positions but it all means nothing if it took too long to rig. You may have to compromise - what can we get away with and what do we really need? Knowing how to car rig is one thing but actually knowing how to pull it off with restrictions and specific needs is what makes for a great rig.
