Rig Breakdown
Highline Lighting Rig
about the rig
This highline rig, inspired by systems used by rescue teams, relied on rope access and tree climbing techniques. It was designed to light a campfire scene with 15 children and 5 adults while staying as discreet as possible to avoid disturbing the non-professional cast. The setup involved a tension line stretched between two pine trees, spaced 35 meters apart, with additional ropes for horizontal movement and one for lifting the space light. All ropes were connected to a simple multi-anchor plate equipped with pulleys and carabiners, with the control lines redirected to the base of one tree for precise adjustments from the ground. To simplify the setup, redundancies were removed since the weight being lifted was minimal compared to a rescue situation. Risks, including heat from the gas ramp fire and a 5K tungsten Chinese ball, were carefully assessed. Despite being a low-budget feature with only a two-person crew, the rig was set up in about two hours.
