about the rig

A 12x20 checkerboard bounce on a condor that pivots on its center axis. Built for an outdoor commercial in a creek-side location surrounded by pines, where there was no high-and-tight stand position for the bounce we needed - so the rig had to come off the condor and chase the sun across the day without coming down for re-rigs. The build is a 12x18 checkered muslin on speedrail. The trick was to undersize the frame width-wise so our 20' steel pipe could span from side to side. We added an additional vertical rib in the center. We hard-mounted the frame to the basket for integrity, but with a few specific Hollaender short barrel cross fittings deliberately left loose at the pivot points. Lines run from the frame corners to the operator in the bucket pivot the frame up and down. We added floor flanges to the vertical pipes and on the outer sides of the loose short barrels to make sure everything was secure and stayed that way. The operator aims the bounce instead of coming down and re-rigging it.

Wide view of an outdoor commercial set - Condor with 12x20 checker bounce mounted overhead above a creek lined with pines, white solid on c-stands at left, crew working in soft morning haze.
12x20 checker bounce tilted nearly vertical near the loading position, side profile of the speedrail frame, crew gathered in the background by the Condor, creek visible at lower right.
12x20 checker bounce tilted at an angle with the full checker face visible, framed through pine branches against blue sky and light cloud.
12x20 checker bounce flat overhead with two operators on top of the frame, crew on the dirt road below, Condor body visible at right.
12x20 checker bounce flat overhead with an operator visible on top of the frame, daylight underneath, pine trees at the lower edge.
12x20 checker bounce overhead viewed through pine branches in the foreground, blue sky and full checker face visible.

Built the frame out of 6” ModX and the carriage frame attachment out of 9” ModX. 6’ vertical of tower provided the high connection points for come alongs that ran out to the frame corners.

Rigged the center of gravity as far toward the back of the bucket without interfering with any bucket tilt capabilities in order to help with adjusted weight.
